The
topographical aspect of the Murgia is varied.
The
part orientated towards the coast is characterized by large areas
of flat lands and deep valleys.
The zone orientated towards the river Ofanto present hills (600
m.) and lame, depressions which are almost completely dry,
presenting not very steep slopes and bottom which is usually cultivated.
In
Andria territory, the most important lama is Ciappetta Camaggi
represented by a torrent called Aveldium. Geologically
the territory is charaterized by Carsismo which indicates
geological phenomena such as caves, depressions, as the result
of erosion of limestone by water.
The
term derives from Carso, a zone in which these phenomena are very
frequent.
In this area, the most typical geologica structures are Puli
(vast cavities), doline (the term derives from Slavonic
and indicates a conical shaped depression) and Gurgo di Andria.
All these phenomena depends on the geological nature of the territory.
The subsoil is composed of a stratum of sedimentary rocks which
is over 2000 m. thick; this stratum, based upon a complex of cristallin
rocks, is composed of Calcare di Bari and Tufo delle
Murge.
The
former is constituted by fragments of sea microfossils, the latter
represents a layer of carboniferous rocks composed of sea macrofossils.
